Working in Madagascar

I took part in Azafady's Pioneer Scheme which involved working on various projects over a ten week period. These projects took place in three villages which were all about 35km away from Fort Dauphin, a town on the south east coast of Madagascar.

Project 1 - Building a school in the village of Tsiroa.

Project 2 - Tree planting, seed collecting and making a family vegetable garden near the village of Sainte Luce.

Project 3 - Doing a health and sanitation play for primary school children, building a well and a school latrine in the village of Emagnevy.

Travelling - After the scheme finished, I travelled around Madagascar for 2 weeks with some of the other volunteers.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who kindly sponsored Jamie and I on our bike ride - having having seen first-hand what Azafady is doing in Madagascar and having helped them with several projects, it is clear to me that they spent your money wisely and well. Thanks to your financial support for Azafady's education, environmental and sanitation projects, the lives of the friendly villagers and their children that I met whilst working in Madagascar has undoubtedly improved.

About Azafady »

Azafady is a registered UK charity and Malagasy NGO, which works in southeast Madagascar with local communities on nature conservation, health and education.

About Madagascar »

Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island. It has an absolutely staggering diversity of plant and animal species, 80% of which are found nowhere else on the planet. However, while one of the biologically richest places on Earth; it is also one of the world’s poorest countries. The country typically spends as much on debt repayments each year as it does on health and education combined.
